5G will impact key sectors like manufacturing to energy, transportation, smart cities, healthcare and much more. Its improved speeds, lower latencies and incredible bandwidth will also present businesses with an innovation platform that will help drive new revenue opportunities by leveraging data and enabling absolutely new and innovative customer experiences.
With the theme ‘Transforming Economies in 5G Era – The Geospatial Way’, Geospatial World Forum 2020, will continue to initiate thought-provoking discussions and advocate for technology innovation and practices in the geospatial industry. The conference shall highlight the value of geospatial technology in digital economy and its integration with emerging technologies such as 5G, AI, Autonomous Vehicles, Big Data, Blockchain, Cloud, IoT and LiDAR in various user industries, including digital cities, construction & engineering, defence & security, global development agenda, telecommunications, and business intelligence.
In the emerging digital economy, geospatial is not just about location. It is more about how the information revolution will affect human livelihood and the surrounding environment. In this sense, ‘Geospatial Way’ will be the future and probably the most efficient and effective way to move forward.
The transition from 1G to 4G was all about increasing speed and data capabilities in mobile phones and smart devices but with 5G we are entering another age altogether. 5G will accelerate the move towards digital as a transformative ecosystem that combines Big data and Cloud, virtualization and augmentation, automation and intelligent machines, distributed computing and artificial intelligence to derive insights from data that is generated by billions of connected devices.
Having established the 5G impact and its criticality in building smart and connected ecosystems, it is very important to look at the role geospatial plays in these technologically emerging and evolving times. Geospatial industry is uniquely placed in the entire digital transformation ecosystem. It is already established that location offers the much needed fourth pillar (along with AI, IoT and Big Data) to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, enabling disruptive innovations and driving smart solutions.
Accurate location information is key to creating a robust 5G ecosystem and a robust 5G ecosystem will in turn help bring greater accuracy in positioning services through higher capacity, more reliability, lower latency and improved coverage. This will enable sub-meter accuracies and empower technologies like factory automation, better connectivity between critical infrastructures, improved smart services, autonomous vehicles and smart transportation and intelligent traffic systems.
With 5G as the backbone, new trends in geospatial technologies such as advancements in data analytics; miniaturization of sensors; New Space revolution; maps for machines; and automation will impact multiple sectors and foster path-breaking innovation.
